THE TIMELESS MAN
by Sarah Jane Barrett Brown
Looking through her window lace
with brew in hand she watched
each morning as he left his home
more faithful than a clock.
Looking through her window lace
sitting in her chair
She considered where he’s going
and what he leaves behind.
His wool brimmed hat and long grey coat
the timeless man—refined.
Looking through her window lace
caught in the rush of time
No recognition in this race
No smell the roses—no hand shakes
Until she heard the man next door
sitting back— She felt secure.
But the timeless man was not.
The world kept going, he got old
And behind the lace she sat
Wishing she had met her rock
the man with the wool brimmed hat.
NOTE: After Sarah’s father Thomas Barrett passed away an elderly neighbor of Thomas, who had never actually met Thomas, confided the following to Sarah:
Every day from behind her “window lace”, this neighbor would observe Thomas, “the man with the wool brimmed hat” going to and coming from work. Daily, without varying—“more faithful than a clock”— he would perform this ritual with dignity and serenity. Without ever having met him, he became “her rock” due to his steadfast, unchanging routine — a beautiful demonstration of a husband and father’s devotion and love in providing for his family.
Many years later Sarah put pen to paper to record this beautiful memory of her father.
