Dear Chip and Janice,

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. She was very special to me! She was a kind and gentle woman. I always loved spending time with her. The matriarch of the family. She would write me letters when I was overseas. She showed interest in my life and she is someone I looked up to. I loved hearing of her great life with Uncle Guy. Touring her backyard and beautiful garden, and sitting in her kitchen drinking tea. Her and your father coming to dinners at my house when we had family gatherings. Your mother was well loved. I can only wish to age as gracefully as she did. When I came back for Thanksgiving, I made sure to visit her. We got to say goodbye. She insisted that “I”ll see you again!”. That I will. I love you Aunt Ruth!

Dear Janice, Chip, & Family,

My most heartfelt sympathies for your loss as we remember your Mom. Losing a parent is never easy. Your Mom was truly an extraordinary lady, a gentle soul, a treasured neighborhood asset and a special friend.

In recent years, prior to her admission to Prescott House, I had the opportunity to visit often, usually on Friday evening on my way home from cooking at Cor Unum Meal Center. She took such a genuine interest in the mission of the meal center, always querying me about what the menu was that evening, how many meals did we served, were there many children that night, how many pounds of meat or potatoes we used, etc.

Of course our conversations weren't limited to the meal center, cooking in general, techniques, recipes, the City of Lawrence, AM talk radio, politics, gardening and family were just a few of the myriad of topics we might have chatted about during any given visit. I tried not to keep her up too late, but she may have ever so politely coaxed me on my way a few times. The visits were truly a pleasure and memorable.

Wish I could be with you. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers as WE celebrate your Mom's remarkable life.

May God rest her soul

I loved asking Mrs. Moore about her life. She shared stories about what it was like growing up in Lawrence. She talked about how the children played at the South Common. She loved playing baseball (or perhaps it was softball) and she was very good at it! She said it was normal for everyone to walk everywhere as they felt safe doing so. They walked to the market, school, the mills, and church etc. Several times, she said “I could write a book about Lawrence.” I wish she had.

She spoke of growing up during the Great Depression and how she saw people be kind and generous with their resources despite economic difficulties. Later in World War II, she wanted to do her part to support the country so she volunteered countless nights at a local hospital as a nursing aid – and this was after putting in a full day at school or work.

When she was planning her life with wonderful Mr. Moore, she recalled how she found a local woman who was a tailor. Mrs. Moore asked her to make her wedding dress – and it was beautiful. She was a stunning bride! She shared stories of looking for and buying their home in Methuen for their future family.

Mrs. Moore was kind and loving to the core! She was always doing things to make people feel happy, make them feel special, comfort them or pray for them. She and Mr. Moore had a routine of visiting friends and family who were ill or in nursing homes. One of her friends in a nursing home was afraid to die alone. So, Mrs. Moore promised to stay with her. And she kept that promise. She spent the night by her friend’s bedside and that dear friend left this world with Mrs. Moore by her.

She was kind and loving and ALWAYS put the happiness and comfort of others before her own. She believed in angels. Frankly, I think she was one.

Perhaps the best way we can honor her is to remember her kindness and generosity and conduct our lives by her example.

Even as a 70 year old woman, I can only address her as Mrs. Moore! As a child growing up in the neighborhood in the late 1950s into the 1960s, I frequented Mrs. Moore’s house many times because of how welcoming she was to the neighborhood children. One could almost be guaranteed a visit would be rewarded with a freshly baked snickerdoodle cookie. Yum!

Many years later I started to visit her with my own grandchildren for afternoon tea parties. Needless to say, her signature cookie the snickerdoodle was introduced to my grandchildren too - they loved them! She enjoyed visits with the babies so much! She was always eager for the next tea party.

Mrs. Moore was a virtuous woman who lived her faith in God every day. She was a devout Roman Catholic who cherished the graces she received from the sacraments, especially Holy Eucharist. Spending time with her was a blessing. She was a very wise and discerning woman who was always interested in listening before speaking. I thank God for the gift of her life, she made the world a better place. May we all pray for the repose of her eternal soul.

Upon meeting our Lord, I believe she will hear these words from scripture -

‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ Matthew 25: 23

Rest In Peace Mrs. Moore. You were loved by many and will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of really knowing you. I was one of the lucky ones.

Mrs. Moore was a TREASURE and a GIFT to all who knew her. She was wise, caring, thoughtful and loving. She will be greatly missed but her legacy of kindness and love will live on. God bless her. Love, L.A.
