In Loving Memory of Nelson Ortiz, Sr., 64, of Lawrence, who peacefully passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Lawrence General Hospital. He was the cherished husband of Madeline (Rodriguez) Ortiz, celebrating nearly two decades of a beautiful marriage.
Born on February 24, 1960, in Puerto Rico, Nelson was the beloved son of the late Domingo Vega and Luz (Vega) Pagan. His journey led him to graduate from Bridgeton Senior High School in Bridgeton, NJ, shaping the foundation for a life filled with purpose. Nelson dedicated his professional career as a program coordinator for the city of Lawrence, leaving an indelible mark on the community he served.
A proud and devoted family man, Nelson was not only a father but a mentor and coach. He instilled the values of teamwork and sportsmanship during his ten years coaching and umpiring a girls' little league softball team. His passion for sports extended to Malden Mills in Lawrence, where he coached and refereed the volleyball team. A staunch supporter of the New York Yankees, he found joy in sharing his love for the game with family and friends.
Beyond the field, Nelson's compassionate heart shone brightly as he generously helped others navigate life's challenges. His legacy is one of selflessness and kindness, forever etched in the hearts of those he touched.
Nelson will be deeply missed by his wife, Madeline Ortiz; his son, Nelson Ortiz, Jr.; siblings Pastor Williams, Angelo, Concepcion, Robert, Iris, Isabel, Peter, Edna, and Wanda; his great grandson, Lloyd; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jenniffer Ortiz.
