Mary F. Somma's Obituary
Mary F. Somma (Aunty May), age 89, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2022 at Colonial Poplin in Fremont, NH. A longtime resident of Salem, NH, Mary also spent 13 years living in Candia. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Genevieve Turner, her sister, Joan Castricone, her brother, Edgar Turner, and her husband, Alfred Somma.
Mary was born on May 6, 1932 in Methuen, MA. Her parents owned and ran Turners Variety Store in Salem for over 50 years. She graduated from Plymouth State College in 1954 with a degree in education. Mary was a school teacher for over 25 years in the NH and MA school systems. She went on to work in her parents’ store up until her retirement.
Mary was loved by family, friends and strangers alike. A true social butterfly, she made friends wherever she went. Unable to have children, she became a devoted Aunt to countless nieces and nephews. She was an avid baker. In her later years, Mary enjoyed baking for the Candia Police and Fire Department. She loved animals, especially dogs, and the beach. She will be missed by so many and forgotten by few.
Family and friends will honor and celebrate Mary’s life by gathering for her calling hours, which will be celebrated from 4-8 PM on Friday, April 29, 2022 at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen. Funeral Mass to follow on Saturday, April 30 at St. Monica Parish, 212 Lawrence Street, Methuen at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MSPCA at 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
