Irene Smith's Obituary
Irene (Arndt) Smith, age 93 of Methuen passed away peacefully on January 18, 2023. Irene was born in Tutschin Germany on November 9, 1929 to the late Gustav and Emma Arndt. In 1947 during WWII, Irene met her late husband Wesley “Bob” Smith on a US Army base. Shortly after marriage, she immigrated to the United States with her husband and in 1954 she became a naturalized citizen of this country. For a period of time, they resided in South Dakota until 1960 when Irene and Bob moved to Massachusetts for a better job opportunity.
Irene enjoyed traveling, crocheting, dancing with Bob and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She worked as a bookkeeper at the former Christian Hill Nursing Home of Lowell. Irene was a long time congregant of First Church Congregational of Methuen, where she also sang in the choir.
Irene was the beloved wife of the late Wesley “Bob” Smith. She was the devoted mother of Nancy Cuticchia and her husband, Joseph, Carolyn Furey and her husband, Michael, Marlene DuPont and her husband, Philip, Shelley Russell and her husband, Paul, the late Linda Proctor, and the late Lori Smith. She was the loving grandmother of 9 and the cherished great-grandmother of 9. Irene was the dear sister of the late Theodore, the late Therese, the late Waldamere, and the late Ruth.
