William Scott McGurn's Obituary
William Scott McGurn, 68, of Seabrook, NH, former longtime resident of Methuen passed away peacefully on February 10, 2021 at the High Pointe House in Haverhill surrounded by his loving family. Scott, as he was affectionately known to all, was born in Methuen on November 18, 1952 to the late William P. and the late MaryAnne (Carney) McGurn. A lifelong Catholic, he attended Saint Monica’s Grammar School, where he was an alumni of their first ever class, and graduated from Central Catholic High School with the Class of 1972. Believing in the value of a secondary education, Scott attended Plymouth State College graduating with the Class of 1976, obtaining his degree in education.
Scott, who had a deep fondness for children and animals, worked for the Andover School District as a special education teacher until his retirement. He enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures; spending countless hours during the summer at Seabrook Beach, fishing, a round of golf, especially at Haverhill Country Club where he was a member for 18 years, cheering on Boston sports teams to another championship, dining with family, and he was also a local Friday night regular for the past 40 years at the dog track in Seabrook, where many knew him as Yankee. Scott touched many lives in many different circles and he will fondly be loved, cherished and missed by all.
Scott is survived by his devoted bride, Katheryne A. “Katie” (Manning) McGurn, also of Seabrook, NH, with whom he shared over 21 years of his life with and married for the last 16 years. He is survived by his dear sister, Anne Drouin, her husband Michael and their son Patrick of Haverhill. Scott is also survived by his two aunts; Clair LeSaffre and Constance Carney, his wife’s nine siblings and their families, many cousins, nieces, nephews and his two lifelong friends; Anthony Sciuto of Woodbridge, NJ, and Mark LaPorte of East Kingston, NH. He is also survived by his beloved best friend and companion, his dog murphy. The McGurn family would also like to acknowledge the attentive and loving care Scott received from his caregiver and home health aide Karen Mannard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 18, 2021 11 AM at Saint Monica’s Parish, 212 Lawrence Street, Methuen. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend, additionally, it is requested that all guests are asked to directly meet at church. Interment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, 110 North Lowell Street, Methuen.
Due to COVID-19 guidelines, face masks will be required at the church and cemetery. Social distancing must be followed and if you have a health or other underlying concern, please do not attend. Scott’s family will understand and respect your decision.
