Walter L. Keaney Jr.'s Obituary
Walter L. Keaney, Jr., 92, of Methuen, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Merrimack Health in Methuen, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary J. (Connor) Keaney.
Born in Lawrence on February 13, 1934, Walter was the son of the late Walter L. and Catherine L. (Jobe) Keaney. He graduated from Lawrence High School and went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1956-1957 aboard the USS Boston, where he was part of the early generation of sailors serving on one of the Navy’s first guided missile cruisers during the Cold War era. Following his miliary service, Walter built a distinguished career as an engineer with Raytheon in Andover where he worked for more than 34 years until his retirement. Known for his intelligence, steady work ethic, and humility, he contributed to projects that supported national defense, though he rarely spoke of his accomplishments, preferring to let his work speak for itself.
Walter was a lifelong sports enthusiast and athlete who excelled in baseball and softball in his youth and young adult years and later enjoyed playing tennis and golf. He was a devoted fan of all New England sports teams but found his greatest joy in supporting his grandchildren at their youth and high school sporting events. A longtime member of the Lawrence British Club, he valued community and camaraderie and always enjoyed a quick pickup game of pool or shuffleboard. Above all, he treasured summers spent at Seabrook Beach with his wife, Mary, and their family—memories that continue to bring comfort and warmth to his children.
Walter was a man of few words but strong values. He showed his love not through grand gestures, but through reliability, kindness, and willingness to help others whenever they were in need. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, subtle sense of humor, and the deep care he had for his family and friends.
He is survived by his two children, Timothy J. Keaney and his wife, Lisa, of Methuen, and Julie C. Keaney of Fairfax, Vermont; his sister, Nancy Richmond and her husband, Richard, of Peabody, Massachusetts; two grandchildren, Annabella and Colby Keaney; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to honor and celebrate Walter’s life during calling hours on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Methuen Family Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen, Massachusetts. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Monica Church, 212 Lawrence Street, Methuen. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Methuen.
