Suzanne Annette Higgins' Obituary
Suzanne Annette Higgins, née Morin, passed away in her home in Andover on May 19, 2022, at the age of ninety-three. The Massachusetts native, born on May 31, 1928, grew up on Tower Hill in Lawrence, daughter of Ernest Joseph Morin and Irene D. Morin, née Bernardin, the proprietors of Morin’s Restaurant. While attending St. Mary’s High School and later Notre Dame Academy in Tyngsboro (from which she graduated in 1946,) she worked in the family business, hand-dipping chocolates for the candy shop. When she wasn’t working downtown, she helped to raise her youngest sister, Natalie, and spent time with her other siblings, Ernest (deceased) and Irene.
Suzie displayed artistic talent from an early age, something her family encouraged. After graduating from Garland Junior College, she continued her studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, graduating in 1950. She then went on to design the Morin’s logo and packaging, as well as produce commercial art for Boston Bank, where she worked as a teller.
In 1954 she married Frank X. Higgins, and while she pivoted her artistic focus toward raising her five children—Natalie, David, Amy, Michael, and Mark—she continued to create. A master of numerous arts, she painted, sewed, knit, quilted, baked, cooked, gardened, and upholstered furniture throughout her long life, leaving her family with countless memories as well as pieces of folk and fine art that will always remind them of her love, humor, and intelligence.
In the 1970s, she decided to return to formal employment outside the home. Returning to the family business, she managed the bakery section of Morin’s until the restaurant was sold, after which time she took a job at Watts Regulator. After retirement, she began to explore creative talents in another artistic field: literature. These explorations culminated in a novel she finished but chose not to publish, save the few copies she had bound to share with members of her family, the only audience she sought.
An active, caring member of the Summer Street community, Suzie will be missed by many, including: her husband Frank X. Higgins and her sisters Irene Sancoff, née Morin, and Natalie T. Leimkuhuler, née Morin; her children (all of whom were her “favorite”): Natalie Marie Cohen, née Higgins, David Francis Higgins, Amy Louise Campbell, née Higgins, Michael Ernest Higgins, and Mark Paul Higgins; and her grandchildren: Gillian Suzanne Esquivia-Cohen, Caitlin Rois Cohen, Kayleigh Ann Campbell, and Maren Brynn Higgins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St. Methuen. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Waverly Rd. North Andover. For directions and online guestbook, please visit the funeral home website, www.pollardfuneralhome.com. The Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home is honored to serve the Higgins Family.
