Rita J (Scanlon) McGreevy's Obituary
Rita J. (Scanlon) McGreevy, 91, longtime resident of Methuen, passed away on October 17, 2018 at the Nevins Nursing & Rehab Center in Methuen surrounded by her devoted family. Born in Lawrence, on April 13, 1927 to the late Edward and Mary (Austin) Scanlon, she was raised and educated in Lawrence, graduating from Lawrence High School with the Class of 1944. After her graduation, Rita attended McIntosh Business School and worked for many years until her retirement from the City of Methuen as the head clerk in the Accessor’s Office.
Rita was a woman who was completely selfless and devoted her time to several different organizations. She served, where she also volunteered for over 18 years, on the Holy Family Hospital Auxiliary as both a board member and vice-president of the board. Rita was also a member of Methuen School Department Retirees Association, Methuen Town Hall Clerical Retirees and the Women of New England Catholic Charities.
A devout lifelong Catholic, she married her sweetheart in a simple ceremony on October 17, 1947 and was a Communicant at St. Monica’s Church in Methuen. Rita was the beloved matriarch of her family and was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She touched many lives in many different circles and will be fondly loved, cherished, and missed by all.
Rita is survived by her three loving sons; Arthur R. McGreevy and his wife Susan of South Berwick, ME, Brian M. McGreevy and his Cynthia of Hingham, and Mark P. McGreevy of Methuen. She is also the proud grandmother to her six grandchildren; Kevin, Craig, Caitlin, Kelsey, Brienne and Kelly. Rita was also the great-grandmother to Samantha, Chase and Zack. In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her cherished husband, Arthur McGreevy, in 1976, her brother Edward J. Scanlon and her sister Marilyn Mitchell.
Visitation for Rita will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 1 – 5 PM at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend. A Mass of Christian Burial Will be celebrated on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11 AM at St. Monica’s Church, 212 Lawrence Street, Methuen. Interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 110 N. Lowell Street, Methuen.
