John W. Cunningham's Obituary
John W. Cunningham, born October 27, 1942, in Chelsea, MA, passed away peacefully in Florida, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of kindness, leadership, adventure, and service to others.
John lived a life defined by compassion, generosity, and action. John graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Revere, MA before attending Boston College, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. While at Boston College, he proudly participated in ROTC, beginning a lifelong commitment to leadership and service.
Following graduation, John entered the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant and was stationed in Chicago. After completing his military service, he joined Raytheon in Waltham, MA beginning an accomplished international career that would span decades and continents.
Throughout his time with Raytheon, John held numerous leadership positions and later transferred to Oxnard as Controller. His work eventually brought him to Saudi Arabia, where he spent a total of 13 years supporting United States military, the Royal Saudi military and international operations for both countries. John later returned to Andover as Vice President of Raytheon International Support Company, where he managed programs that spanned some of the world’s most remarkable environments across the world— from supporting Brazilian Rain Forest protection initiatives to contributing to scientific exploration efforts in Antarctica. His work combined technical expertise with a passion for global cooperation and discovery.
After retiring from Raytheon, John and his beloved wife moved to Marco Island, where he devoted himself to helping others through Habitat for Humanity Collier County. Serving on the Board of Directors and eventually as Chairman of the Board, John helped lead one of the largest Habitat for Humanity organizations in the United States, contributing to the construction of hundreds of homes for families in need and positively impacting generations to come.
He was predeceased by his mother, Mary (O’Brien) Cunningham; his father, John W. Cunningham, Sr.; his brother, Joseph Cunningham; his sister, Ellen Cunningham Bouvette; his nephew, Mark J. Nassif; and his brother-in-law, James Dalton.
John leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Diane M. (Smerdon) Cunningham; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Dalton, Linda Condon and her husband, J. Ronald; nephews, Gerald Nassif and Jackie Smith, Jay Condon and Colleen, and Darryl Condon and Carrie Woessner; and niece, Robin Maggio and her husband, Joseph. He also leaves behind several cousins.
John Cunningham’s life was one of service, courage, exploration, leadership, and compassion. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate John's life during visiting hours on Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Methuen Family Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen, MA 01844. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Methuen Family Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence Street, Methuen, MA 01844. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 130 N. Lowell Street in Methuen. A luncheon will follow the burial. In honor of John’s generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Collier County 11145 Tamiami Trail E, Naples, FL 34113.
