Eva J. Hernandez's Obituary
Eva J. Hernández (Bermúdez), 85, of Lawrence passed away at Lawrence General Hospital surrounded by family and friends on September 5, 2024. She was born on March 28, 1939, to the late Ramón and Iluminada (Garcia) Bermúdez of Las Villas, Cuba.
Born and raised in Santo Domingo-Las Villas, Cuba, Eva immigrated to the United States in 1967 with her husband, Avelino and their son, Ramón settling in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where she would quickly adapt to her new home and community. Proud of her heritage, she was an active member of the Cuban community in Lawrence and participated in many festivals and early Semana Hispana events. As a proud Lawrencian, she worked at Cardinal Shoe, AT&T, and for many years at Raytheon until her retirement. She made many friends and was always grateful for the sharing of their diverse cultures, especially their food traditions.
Eva always welcomed family and friends to her home and enjoyed preparing meals for them. Eva brought her love for music and dancing from Cuba to Lawrence and she took every opportunity to dance. She was an avid reader and for many years would knit and crochet. She loved American tv and movies and never tired of rewatching her favorites. As a grandmother she adored grandchildren and loved taking care of and playing with them. Eva was also a caring neighbor and enjoyed talking to neighbors as she watched the neighborhood from the porch of her home in Tower Hill.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of almost 60 years, Avelino Vicente Hernández, and her sister Ana F. Bermúdez Garcia of Havana, Cuba.
Eva leaves behind her cherished children, Ramón A. Hernández and his husband Jesus Gonzalez of Imperial Beach, California, Avelino F. Hernández III, and his husband Antonio Ruisanchez of Andover, Massachusetts, and Maribel Hernández of Lawrence, Massachusetts. She also leaves behind three grandchildren: Gabriel, Gwenevier, and Priscilla and her loving three sisters-in-law: Xiomara Dube of Kendall, Florida, Rosa Barrial of Methuen, Massachusetts, and Paulina Lopez of Lawrence, Massachusetts. In addition, she is survived by a niece, nieces-in-law, nephews-in-law, and several great nephews and nieces-in-law.
A visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St., Methuen, MA on Thursday, September 12, 2024 from 9am-12pm. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at the Bellevue Cemetery, 170 May St., Lawrence, MA at 1:00pm.
