Dan and I met at Honeywell Brighton in 1973. He kept growing into positions with increased responsibility. Senior Buyer at Honeywell , senior buyer at DEC Westminster, Manager at DEC large system group, Manager of Corporate purchasing group. I was replacing him at Honeywell, at Dec Westminster and then worked directly for Dan with Mark Koretz in the corporate purchasing group. We were growing together.

Dan was very loyal to his group. He also set an excellent example for others to follow and worked harder than most

All of this happened over a period of five years. If we stayed at Honeywell it would have taken 10-15 years to move into the positions we then had.

At Honeywell we would go to lunch. DAN, happily found a low cost (CHEAP) Mexican restaurant that Al DiPietro, Ed Paderson, and I visited often. This Mexican restaurant had flies on the wall in the middle of the winter. He eventually found better Mexican restaurants for us to visit. His heart was always getting the best deal both at restaurants and work.

I worked with and for Dan both at Digital (DEC) and Hughes Network Systems (HNS) in Maryland for 15 years. In all my experiences with Dan, I learned what a super-smart. business savvy, results oriented, and fair manager he was. There were lots of "empty suits" at both companies....Dan was one of the very rare exceptions. I was proud to work with/for him and I want Jean and his family to know how well respected and very special he was to me and all those who he touched in his business career.......RIP Dan....

After beach bumming and odd jobs for a couple years after college, I needed a real job. My older sister worked in the HR dept at Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC) and was able to get me an interview for a Junior Buyer position at the newly acquired facility in Marlboro, MA. It had recently been purchased from RCA. Dan had transferred from DEC, Westminster, MA to staff up the Purchasing Dept. at the Marlboro, Large Computer Group, facility. I was very “green” but Dan saw something in me that clicked and hired me. The year was 1974. Maybe it was that we were two UMASS Amherst alums…he 1967, me 1972. Dan spent valuable time with me on the major aspects of purchasing materials for a computer company. He was tough but always respected my work. And yes, as noted, he was very stoic! After deciding to take another, larger role at DEC and leave Marlboro, he pulled me aside on his last day and basically gave his version of an “attaboy”… saying I had lots of upside and should go far, or words to that effect. He was the best mentor to have at that beginning stage of my career. I subsequently left the Marlboro job, but was back working for Dan’s new organization a few years later. I left DEC in 1981 to start a new career in high technology semiconductor sales which I did for the next 25 years. Dan got me kickstarted on a very successful 32 years in high tech. I will always respect him for providing me that opportunity.
