Charles T. Matses' Obituary
Charles T. Matses, 99, of Boxford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday June 22, 2026.
Charles was born in Methuen, Massachusetts, the son of the late Theodore and Rose (Constandy) Matses. He attended the Searles School and was a graduate from High School. He then went on to attend The Wentworth Institute of Technology and The Boston Architectural Center.
Charles was an entrepreneur who went on to build a distinguished career in real estate and construction, founding Charles Construction Company, Inc. in North Andover, Massachusetts in 1953. He then continued to establish several real estate companies, developing many landmark properties throughout Massachusetts. Even in his latter years, he remained actively involved in the business and continued going to work until his final days. A devoted family man, Charles supported his family in every way possible and took great pride in attending his children’s sporting events, and later cheering on his grandchildren as well.
Charles received an Honorary Doctorates Degree from Merrimack College and generously contributed his time and leadership to numerous community organizations. He served on various boards, including those of Lawrence General Hospital, Lawrence General Hospital Foundation, Arlington Trust Bank, Bank of New England, and the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts to name a few. Beyond his professional and civic accomplishments, Charles and Louise had a lifelong passion for thoroughbred horse racing and owned and operated a thoroughbred racing enterprise that brought him tremendous joy.
Above all, Charles will be remembered for his timeless work ethic, generosity, commitment to his community and unwavering devotion to family.
He was predeceased by his five siblings, Harold T. Matses, Nick Matses, John T. Matses, Sam Matses and Adell Seaborne. Charles is survived by his beloved wife of seventy six years, Louise (Bova) Matses of Boxford, Massachusetts, his six children, Charles A. Matses and his wife Linda of Boxford, Debra L. Mathias and her husband F. Jeffery Mathias of Boxford, Steven C. Matses of North Andover, Cynthia Matses Stern and her husband Rick of Boxford, Alana Matses Dunn and her husband Phil of Newbury and Andrew C. Matses and his wife Robin of Boxford. He also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and extended family.
At the request of the family all services were private. Donations in his memory may be made to Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem, New Hampshire. The Methuen Family Funeral Home is honored to serve the Matses Family.
