Calvin R. Snell's Obituary
On Monday, December 4, 2023, Calvin R. “Bob” Snell passed away peacefully in his sleep at Westford House Nursing Home, Westford MA from Alzheimer’s disease. The son of Mary (Cooney) Snell and Calvin R. Snell, Bob (as friends and family called him) grew up on Pleasant Street in North Andover, MA along with his younger brother. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1952.
Bob entered the US Army in 1954 and spent his enlisted years in Frankfort, Germany where he was a personal driver for his commanding officer and worked setting up telephone lines for field communications. All the while maintaining a long-distance relationship with his beautiful fiancé and love of his life Marcy (Poirier). They were married on September 16, 1956, a marriage that lasted 66 years until Marcy’s passing in 2022. They lived in Methuen, MA for most of those years and raised their two children making many cherished memories with their family.
Bob was a self-taught carpenter and did many renovations in their home, as well as making many cabinets and curios for his wife. Bob was an accomplished artist with portraits being his specialty, as people were his favorite subjects. He loved people and would make friends wherever he went. He was a long-time member of St. Monica parish and loved going to church and serving communion and had made many friends there. He was retired from the telephone company after 35+ years of service and would sometimes meet some of his old work buddies for lunch at Mama Mary’s restaurant. He and Marcy loved to play golf and going out to eat, often taking their grandson along. He was a football fan and when his son joined a Pop Warner team, he became a coach. He went to many Methuen and North Andover high school football games over the years and enjoyed taking his grandson to watch the games with him. Bob loved music. He played the ukelele and enjoyed playing the organ. He also loved to sing, though he was shy to sing in public, but he taught his kids and grandkids a few of the old songs he learned from his father and mother.
Bob is survived by his brother, Edward Snell and his wife, Florence, his son, Mark Snell and his wife, Brenda, his daughter, Karen (Snell) Jessee and her husband, Bill, his granddaughter, Ashley (Snell) Larochelle and her husband Roger, his grandson, William Jessee and his great-granddaughter, Finley Larochelle, and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A private service will be held for the immediate family at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Bob’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://act.alz.org. The Kenneth H.
