Betty Hoyt's Obituary
Betty Hoyt, 89, of Westport MA and Salem NH, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2018 at High Pointe House in Haverhill MA. She was the beloved wife of the late Albert F. Hoyt, to whom she was married for 52 years, and companion of Clifford Cleary of Salem NH, with whom she spent the past eight years.
Born in Providence, RI on March 3, 1929, she was the daughter of Howard and Ethel (Jane) Gross. Betty was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School in Providence RI. For over 25 years, Betty was a resident of Attleboro MA, where she and Albert raised five children. In addition, Betty was a medical transcriptionist, working for a local orthopedic surgeon and for many years in the medical records department of Sturdy Memorial Hospital. She also studied court stenography and worked transcribing court reporting records. In 1986, she and Albert moved to their beloved Westport MA, where they enjoyed many relaxing retirement years. Betty was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Attleboro MA; the First Baptist Old Stone Church of Tiverton, RI; and the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Salem NH.
Betty loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and cats. She spent many years as a member of the choir at First Baptist Church in Attleboro, and also enjoyed reading, knitting, and doing crossword puzzles. In her retirement years, she loved attending church, taking walks at their home near the beach in Westport, and hosting an annual summertime party for extended family.
Betty will be deeply missed by her companion, Clifford Cleary of Salem NH; daughter Judy Cosby of Alexandria VA; son David and his wife Penny of Wimauma, Florida; Jeffrey and his wife Tracy Spallina of Santa FE, NM; daughter Paula Hoyt and her husband Anthony Grace of Westford Ma; son Gregory and his wife Marla of Reading MA; and grandchildren Eric Cosby, Kelvin Hoyt, Bailey Hoyt, Nicholas Grace, and Carson Grace. Betty is predeceased by her husband, Albert F. Hoyt, sister Dorothy Cleary, brother Pat Gross, and son-in-law Richard Cosby.
Friends and guests are invited to call on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Pleasant St. United Methodist Church, 8 Pleasant St. Salem, NH. A Funeral Service will be held immediately following calling hours, beginning promptly at 11:00 AM at the church. Per the family’s request, there will be no interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Rd. Waltham, MA 02452.
