Avelino Hernández

Avelino Vicente Emilio Hernández Enriquez, 89, of Lawrence passed away at his home on Saturday, December 17, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born on April 5, 1933 to the late Avelino and Rosa (Enriquez) Hernández. Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Avelino proudly served in the Cuban Army. He immigrated to the United States in 1967 with his wife, Eva and their son, Ramon settling in Lawrence, Massachusetts, which would be his home for the rest of his life. Avelino worked many years at Malden Mills, where he also served as a union steward. He also worked for Raytheon for many years until his retirement, but as a hard worker, he continued to work for a few more years part-time at a local Stop & Shop. Avelino never lost his immense love for his homeland Cuba. He loved being part of a local Cuban cultural group where he volunteered by representing Cuba during the early years of Semana Hispana. He loved Cuba, libertad, celebrating special occasions with a cake from Tripoli’s Bakery, all genres of music, Cuban coffee, writing his thoughts, red wine, and history. He also enjoyed spending time with family, enjoyed playing pool & dominoes, going to Foxwoods, tall ships, going to the beach, an avid sports fan, especially the Boston Red Sox, and also had a passion for the numbers game. As of recently he enjoyed going to Dunkin Donuts and then visiting a local park to walk and look over the Merrimack River alongside his grandson, Gabriel. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Andres Hernández of Lawrence, Luis Hernández of Lawrence, Massachusetts; and sister, Dinorah Diaz of Hialeah, Florida. Avelino leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Eva (Bermúdez) Hernández of Lawrence; his cherished children, Alina Hernández of Miami, Florida, Ramon Hernández of Imperial Beach, California, Avelino F. Hernández of Roseville, California, and Maribel Hernández of Lawrence, Massachusetts. He also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Xiomara Dube of Kendall, Florida, Rosa Barrial of Methuen, Massachusetts, and Paulina Lopez of Lawrence, Massachusetts. In addition, he is survived by several great-nieces, great-nephews, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, from 4:00-8:00 PM at the Kenneth H. Pollard Funeral Home, 233 Lawrence St., Methuen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish, 300 Haverhill St., Lawrence, MA 01840.
